Abstract

People with Down syndrome have a high rate of Alzheimer's Dementia. However, tools for detection of dementia and cognitive decline in Brazil are not adapted for people with intellectual disabilities. Recently some diagnostic tools for dementia specific for this population have been validated in the United States and Europe. The CAMDEX-DS (The Cambridge Examination for Mental Disorders of Older People with Down's Syndrome and Others with Intellectual Disability) stands out due to its levels of validity and reliability, and the use of established diagnostic criteria (DSM-IV and ICD-10). The aim of this study is to investigate risk factors for cognitive decline and dementia in persons with Down Syndrome and evaluate the validity and reliability of the scale CAMDEX-DS for the Brazilian population with DS. It is a cross-sectional study of double-blind validation with translation, back-to-back translation and validation of the instrument, well as research on risk factors. Will be examined concurrent validity of the clinical diagnosis and CAMDEX DS and inter-rater reliability using the Kappa coefficient (p d .05). The validation CAMDEX-DS for the Brazilian population with Down Syndrome will allow early and effective diagnosis of dementia in this population, increasing the possibilities of pharmacological treatment and other geriatric interventions focused on improving its prognosis.
