Abstract

The correct identification of diatoms is a fundamental to assess environmental conditions. The araphid pennate diatoms can be abundant in aquatic communities. The taxonomic characteristics that delimit the genera of some freshwater araphid pennates are not well defined yet, indicating the need of revision. This study aims to expand taxonomic and ecological information of the genera Fragilaria, Fragilariforma, Synedra and Ulnaria from freshwater environments in the State of São Paulo. Together, these genera were cited 78 times in the State, and that most of the information was not published and comes from theses and dissertations. There are no studies involving ecological information with the distribution of araphid pennate in State of São Paulo, Brazil or even in the tropical regions. It is becoming urgent to review through the incorporation of new information ultrastructural (SEM) analysis of material-type and study of populations of different types of habitats. The proposal will cover samples under the Project Biota (1960-2011) and Project AcquaSed (2010-2014). Ecological information will be obtained from limnological database AcquaSed Project. The association between species and environmental variables will be explored in the multivariate analyzes. This proposal will advance the taxonomic and ecological characterization of diatoms "fragilarioid" in order to provide more consistent basis for as bioindicators. The association of taxonomy with ecological information is a pioneer for tropical environments and scarce in global scope. (AU)
