Abstract

The Neotropical region is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world and this has intrigued evolutionary biologists and naturalists for centuties. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the origin of this diversity. Systematic and biogeographical studies of Neotropical organisms have been produced to create and test these hypotheses. Some studies, especially of birds, mammals and amphibians, suggest that historical connections between the Amazonian and the Atlantic forests were important in the diversification history of these organisms. The currently available sequencing technologies allow to access thousands of genome segments that, in turn, allow to infer divergence dates and phylogenetic relationships with higher precision, thus reconstructing more accurate historic scenarios. The goal of this project is to unveil the processes associated to historical connections between the Amazon and the Atlantic forests based on the biogeographic study of two avian genera that belong to the family Cotingidae. We will produce thousands of sequences using second generation sequencing methods and will perform coalescent phylogenetic reconstruction (species tree). This strategy will allow us to reveal patterns and infer processes involved in the diversification of these organisms with unprecedent accuracy. (AU)
