Influence of care in family dynamics of dependent elderly assisted by a home care program of a university hospital

Abstract

It is observed in Brazil a growing number of people with disabilities and dependence due to external causes, but also by the dynamics of growth and aging population. Dependent individuals need assistance to perform basic activities of daily living, a task that is usually assumed by a caregiver. Cultural, social and economic factors tend to put family as the primary source of care. The presence of a dependent person in the family can cause changes in family functioning, requiring restructuring. This study aims to evaluate how care for patients with varying degrees of dependency affects family dynamics. Its purpose is to help identify the needs of families caring for a dependent family, supporting them in the achievement of care in order to improve their quality of life. The quantitative study of transversal, descriptive and exploratory character will be conducted with family caregivers of patients registered in the Programa de Assistência Domiciliar do Hospital Universitário da Universidade de São Paulo. As instruments of data collection will be used the Functional Independence Measure, the Apgar Family, genogram, the ecomap and questionnaire for sociodemographic characteristics of patients and family caregivers.
