Abstract

Biomass is a renewable resource used for bioenergy production, whose importance is growing every day, due to environmental concerns and the oil crisis. These concerns have aroused the interest of optimizing the use of available biomass, both in the availability of other more efficient renewable sources of generating energy, such as coal obtained from the thermal conversion of lignin, as other products with higher added value. Lignin is a biopolymer present in the cell walls of plants, available in large quantities in companies that produce pulp and paper. Being that main use of lignins involves the power generation through its direct burning. However, considering that the chemical structure of lignin is rich in aromatic rings more noble applications of this material are investigated, such as carbons with different surface areas applicable both in power generation and adsorption of pollutants and catalyst support, for example. Thus, the aim of this project involves the physicochemical characterization of lignin, its thermal conversion into coal, followed by chemical and/or microwave plasma treatments, in order to increase its surface area, aiming to obtain activated carbons with different pore distributions.
