Abstract

Turf is significant in the multinational breeding and racing horses. The exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) decreases athletic performance and, because it presents a difficult elucidation in its etiology, treatment is palliative and based on the administration of furosemide, a diuretic agent that reduces plasma volume, blood pressure, alveolar rupture and hemorrhage . However the adverse effects of the drug are important. When considering that acupuncture improves athletic performance of horses, the pharmacopuncture has the advantage of minimizing the indiscriminate use of drugs, their side effects and the cost. The objective is to assess by clinical and endoscopic examination of the upper respiratory tract, the ability of pharmacopuncture in reducing the degree of EIPH in horses PSI compared to applied systemically furosemide. For this purpose, 18 animals with EIPH will be evaluated after performing intense exercise. Each animal will be their own control andwill recieve systemic dose of furosemide, pharmacopuncture or no medication in different racing simulations. After exercise the animals will undergo clinical examination of vital parameters and respiratory tract and endoscopic evaluation of the degree of bleeding presented. Structures will be observed from the nasal meatus to the bronchial bifurcation classifying bleeding in grades I to V. Hematocrit and total protein will be obtained to estimate the degree of dehydration of the animals after different routes of administration of the diuretic. Analysis of variance with repeated measures will be used to compare mean values between groups and time points studied.
