Abstract

The aim of this project is to study the territorial conflicts between the Afro-Colombian community of La Toma, who make their living from traditional mining, and the Colombian state. The state handed over the right to exploit the community's ancestral territory to a large-scale industrial transnational company. The historical roots of the community in La Toma, in the South East of Colombia can be traced back to 1634 but the state's 2007 licensing of the transnational company ignored the ethnic and territorial rights recognized by the Colombian Constitution of 1991, especially the right to a prior and public consultation. This project departs from the anthropological literature on black communities developed since the 1950s in Colombia and the theoretical perspectives provided by political ecology. Ultimately it will analyse the territorial dynamics of the community of La Toma, from its traditional management practices to its strategies of resistance in the face of a recent conflict and the ways in which territory acquires new meanings and evaluations.
