Abstract

Polymer nanocomposites are composite materials where the matrix is a polymer and dispersed phase has at least one of its dimensions in the nanometer range. In this study, Multi Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT) will be used as dispersed phase in epoxy matrix. Due to the large aspect ratio of MWCNT materials with excellent mechanical and electrical properties are possible to be obtained. There is improve in mechanical, electrical and thermic properties with less than 1 wt% of MWCNT. However, to produce polymer nanocomposites epoxy/MWCNT with low cost and good electrical conductivity, it is necessary to reduce the electrical percolation threshold and facilitate their processing. Recent studies in epoxy resin nanocomposites obtained with mineral fillers, such as montmorillonite, shows that mineral fillers improve dispersion of MWCNT in epoxy matrix, reducing the electrical percolation threshold. This research project aims to obtain and study the mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of hybrid nanocomposites epoxy/MWCNT/mineral fillers. The hybrid epoxy matrix nanocomposites are obtained by in situ polymerization assisted by sonication and will be evaluated the influence of the addition of mineral fillers with three different geometry of particles: montmorillonite, sepiolite, and calcium carbonate on properties of the nanocomposite epoxy/MWCNT.
