Abstract

The proposed research project aims to understand the occurrences of orientalist architecture in homes (mansions) of the city of São Paulo, between the decades 1890-1935, toward an understanding of formal, compositional, symbolic and discursive relations, especially their languages of distinction and specificities in connection with the other oriental. Aims to identify the process of incorporation of this architectural vocabulary and the constitution of the social field production of this language in the city, taking into account its agents, and its links with European architectural fashions of the period. Likewise, understanding and perception of these occurrences paulistanians orientalist architecture requires an understanding of architecture as representative element to their owners, in view of the role and possibilities of affirmation, distinction and appropriation, connections and relationships with this oriental imagery. In this sense, understanding the specificities of the São Paulo case, it seems to us, is shown marked by the coexistence of the incorporation of a European fashion and artistic appropriation of his image Orientalist by Arab immigrants settled in São Paulo, pointing to meanings and bonds of identity and otherness.
