Abstract

The objective of this research is to study the role of the prison casa de detenção da corte of Rio de Janeiro in social control routines. It is interesting to understand the role of this prison in police routines and how it was experienced both by the free people and the slaves who were incarcerated there. It will be studied not only the institutional path that seeks to understand the place of casa de detenção within the prison system and the police dynamics, but also the social field concerning the role of the prison published in the Press. The research covers the period from the start of the activities of the prison in 1856, until the end of the Empire in 1889. To undertake this research, the inmates' enrollment books will be studied crossing the information with legislative sources, reports of political authorities and newspaper from the period. (AU)
