Cutaneous mast cell tumors are characterized by excessive proliferation of neoplastic dermal mast cells. They represent almost one third of the malignant skin tumors of the dogs. The condition is most common in animals from eight to nine years old, which might present paraneoplastic signs. The terapy depends on the evaluation of the physical condition of the patient as well as clinical and histological grade of the tumor. Due to the difficulty of predicting their biological behavior and thus to define the treatment protocols, cutaneous mast cell tumors have caused several therapeutic frustrations. For this reason, there was intensification of the search for prognostic indicators. Nanog expression measurement in mast cell is extremely important for clinical prognostic evaluation of affected patients, since this protein is a key part of the transcription factors involved in maintenance of pluripotency and self-renewal of cancer stem cells. Nanog expression. in mast cell tumors, if confirmed, will make the treatment of mast cell tumors with specific molecular therapy on the coding domain of this protein possible. In the present study we will investigate the expression of Nanog in 50 cases of canine mast cell tumors of different histopathological grades in order to establish relationships with histological features and prognosis of these tumors.
