Abstract

The central aim of this research is to understand the movements that made UNESCO adopt a concept of culture of anthropological inspiration, specially on its work on "cultural policies" from the 1960s. In order to further understand the way this idea was eventually appropriated in national contexts and how these contexts also impacted the construction of this notion, it is proposed to take the relationship between Brazil and UNESCO as the main focus of study. It is not case, therefore, to consider Brazil (only) as some kind of laboratory, but to take into account the way a Brazilian social thought impacted the construction of this conceptual framework, in a circular motion. This argument gains eloquence if we consider that intellectuals as Josué Montello, Gilberto Freyre, Arinos Afonso de Mello Franco Aloísio Magalhães, Celso Furtado, among others, held important positions in state executive bodies responsible for drafting the cultural policy of the country. It will be necessary, then, to map the changes in the core concepts operated in this context - such as race, citizenship, social participation and development - and the role of intellectuals who worked directly to give effect to such constructions. A concern about the ways in which certain concepts of social science are established, as well as their uses, permeates the investigation. (AU)
