Abstract

The Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis (CVL), disease caused by Leishmania infantum and transmitted by sandfly vector Lutzomyia longipalpis, is considered a public health problem in Brazil. Because of the close approximation of domestic dogs with humans, dogs are considered important reservoirs of the disease in the urban environment. The objective of this study is an epidemiological study of VL in dogs and cats from two Animal Protective Association shelters of the municipality of Ilha Solteira, SP, in addition to sandfly vector surveys and analysis of risk factors. Serological tests (immunoenzymatic assay) and IFAT (Immunofluorescence Antibody Test) will be performed in animals on a continuous basis, not only those present permanently in the shelters but also the new dogs and cats that come to the shelters for a period of one year. Moreover, the Montenegro´s reaction for evaluation of cellular immune response and its association with the clinical state of the animals will be done. Sandfly collections will be made with CDC light traps placed near or inside the dog and cat shelters with monthly collections for a period of two years. A study of the disease correlated with the presence and infectivity of the vectors and the climatic factors obtained from the Meteorological Station Ilha Solteira, SP, will also be undertaken. (AU)
