Abstract

The present proposal aims at investigating the social and political history of the illegal slave trade of the nineteenth century, which led to the disembarkation of approximately 1,300,000 enslaved Africans in Brazil and Cuba between 1820 and 1867. The main goal is to discuss key aspects of this highly internationalized contraband slave trade through a study of the trajectories of the main slave traders, their networks, and strategies. By analyzing these slave-trading networks, this study will explore transformations in the history of the contraband and the processes that interconnected the destinies of Cuba, Brazil, and the United States. This research will provide a better understanding of the mechanisms and configurations that allowed the emergence of these illegal flows of slaves in the Atlantic world. It will also explore the connections between the industrial world of the nineteenth century and the slave trade and, consequently, contribute to broader debates on capitalism and slavery. (AU)
