Abstract

This scientific initiation project, connected to the School of Communication and Arts (ECA) and the Center for the Study of Violence of the University of São Paulo (NEV-USP), aims at identifying and characterizing the visibility of the television shows "Cidade Alerta" and "Brasil Urgente", related to police action in the city of Sâo Paulo. That is, we are concerned with the discursive formats and elements, and the exposition of the population of the city to these shows. The methodology consists of qualitative and quantitative analyses. In the qualitative part, we will characterize the formats and discursive elements of these shows, with focus on the performances of the hosts and the aesthetic and expressive elements used. This approach comes from literature review on journalism related to the police and appropriations of Jürgen Habermas discourse theory. After that, we will use the software NVivo in order to select and analyze parts of the most frequent dicourses. In the quantitative analysis, we will measure the level of exposition of the population of representative areas of São Paulo to these shows, with focus on the corpus used in the NEV CEPID project.
