Evaluation of quality of life and functional capacity in obese with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) associated with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSA)

Abstract

Beyond the epidemiological relations of the association between COPD and OSA, as well as the cardiovascular and metabolic consequences, it's primordial to emphasize the obesity's influence, becoming evident that the interaction between COPD, OSA, and obesity can, somehow, raise the cardiovascular risk and the probability of death, and also concur to worse the quality of life and the functional capacity. Objective: this present review aims to verify the life quality and the functional capacity in obese patients linked to COPD and OSA. Methods: will be selected 116 obese individuals with moderate, severe, and very severe COPD. The diagnosis of COPD by spirometry will be performed and patients must present a body mass index (BMI)> 27 kg/m2. Later, they will undergo polysomnography to confirm the diagnosis of OSA. With this, will be formed two groups: (1) COPD associated with obesity without OSA (58 patients) and (2) COPD associated with obesity with OSA (58 individuals). Specific questionnaires will be assessing the degree of dyspnea ["Modified Medical Research Council (MMRC)" modified], quality of life [Questionnaire Saint George's Respiratory (SGRQ)] and sleep scales ("Berlin Questionnaire" and "scale Epworth daytime sleep ").
