Abstract

The adoption of Electronic Health Record Systems (EHR-S) has brought impacts to the health sector. One of the main goals of the EHR-S is to support continuity, efficiency and quality in health care, in addition to enabling reduction of medical errors and improve patient safety. Despite these benefits, the literature also provides evidencies that the use of EHR-S can also bring risks to patient safety. However, there is a significant gap in the existence of initiatives that address aspects of patient safety associated with the use of EHR-S. In this context, the aim of this project is to investigate solutions and strategies to mitigate risks to patient safety associated with the EHR-S. To this end, the following stages of development of this project can be identified: definition of EHR-S lifecycle, identification of the actors involved in each stage of the lifecycle, identification of risks to patient safety associated with the EHR-S, investigation of strategies for risk mitigation and assessment of the coverage of the EHR-S certification process of the Brazilian Society of Health Informatics and the Federal Council of Medicine in mitigating these risks. Data collection will be done through literature reviews and data analysis will be given through thematic analysis. This project aims to contribute to the identification of the role of each actor involved in the lifecycle of the EHR-S in the mitigation of risks to patient safety associated with the use of EHR-S.
