Abstract The skin is an organ in constant renewal and its homeostasis is maintained mainly by resident stem cells. During the aging process, the regenerative potential declines due to impairment of these cells, therefore reducing the capacity of tissues to respond to damage or stress. The maintenance of tissue homeostasis is a highly energy-demanding process and mitochondria are the main organelle responsible for the ATP production in the eukaryotic cell. The aim of this work is to characterize the bioenergetics changes and mitochondrial contribution to skin aging, comparing the stem cells with the differentiated compartment in both young and old mice. | |
