Abstract

During the past three decades, researchers have been studying the phenomenon known as responding by exclusion, usually described as a tendency to relate an undefined stimuli (such as pictures or objects) to another undefined stimuli (e.g., a word), without prior learning. The disciplines of behavior analysis and Psycholinguistics have investigated the relationship of this phenomenon with the acquisition of verbal repertoire, especially with people with developmental delay, such as language delay, as a manner to investigate variables that interfere in vocabulary learning. Children with language delay are identified from the age of two, and present small vocabulary, but without any underlying pathology. The aims of this project are: a) to investigate the occurrence of exclusion responding on name-object relation in children with language delay, compared to typically developing children, and b) to investigate the interference of contextual cues in responding by exclusion of these children, employing stimuli with nouns and verbs topographies. Two studies will be conducted: the first one will test responding by exclusion in auditory-visual matching-to-sample tasks. The second experiment will be conducted with the same matching-to-sample task, but involving auditory stimuli with nouns and verbs in the gerund topographies as samples, and motion pictures and static images as comparisons.
