Abstract

A 3 year Doctoral scholarship for Tiago Sutili is solicited. The candidate has completed MSc under Fapesp scholarship (Proc. 12/11423-7), with grade A in all disciplines. He presented the work in a Brazilian Congress (Momag2014) and prepared a patent application. He is an electrical engineer from the University of Passo Fundo, having had excellent grades in undergraduate program (9.07 average). In the ENADE (National Examination Performance of students), for the year of completion of his graduation, the candidate hit a note equal to the national maximum among students graduating in electrical engineering. The main goal relates to advanced technologies for optical space switches based on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), aiming high speed optical coherent communications networks, using a test bed to be completed by Prof. Conforti (PITE Project-Fapesp-Padtec proc. 56,024-4 entitled "Optical Coherent Technologies"). The Unicamp cooperation with the Brazilian industry Padtec has already been renewed for another 3 years, and a new project PITE is to be sent to Fapesp, also under the coordination of Prof. Conforti. The doctoral dissertation involves the analysis of the effects on bit error rates (penalties), when at least two adjacent optical channels are being switched from one fiber to the other, through the above-mentioned space switches. The optical channels will be modulated in DQPSK and/or multilevel 16-QAM, with electronic rate from 2 up to 56 Gbit/s.
