Abstract

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic progressive disease, characterized by inflammation, demyelization and destruction of the motor and sensory axons widespread the central nervous system (CNS). Neurological manifestation could be different from one to the next, but balance disorders affect more than 75% of patients during the course of the disease, even in those with mild disability. The Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) has been the gold standard for defining disability progression in patients with MS. However, many authors had shown the insensitivity to detect subtle impairments. Considering that balance disorders are reported by patients since the beginning of the disease and that there is the need to detect signs to characterize it´s progress, our objective is to determine the accuracy of Posturography analysis as a tool to identify balance disorders in MS patients underestimated by clinical evaluation. The importance of balance disorders in the course of MS will be shown through observational study. MS patients and mild disability will be evaluated following our protocol test, including: anamneses, EDSS evaluation, Computerized Dynamic Posturography (CDP) test and clinical observational tests. After a period from 18 to 24 months, data related to disease evolution will be collected from the medical files. Forty control subjects will be evaluate. This study will analyze if factors related to balance disorders are related to the prognosis and the course of the disease. (AU)
