Abstract

This project pursues to build a dialogue between three scientific disciplines (Anthropology, Geography, and Demography) and two concepts much known to them: ethnicity and territory. Particularly it will reflect about how government bureaus and agencies designs and captures the data on race and ethnicity, and how this official data will endorse and be used to build and execute social and public policies. Therefore, we divide the study into two parts: one concerning the compilation and evaluation of public and social policies whose aim is to recognise ethnic and racial diversity; the other focusing on capture the territorial and social dimension inscribed in the daily life of the population to whom those policies are designed with the use of an ethnographic approach. Those two parts will be them juxtaposed to evaluate how the data and policies offer efficient and effective grassroots to improve people's life. For the first part, the scope would cover the whole Latin America and Caribbean and it will help to choose interesting cases to narrow down the ethnographic scope to some three or four cases. Thus, conducting the research with a mixed methods approach we believe we could contribute to put together a substantial dataset about how traditional population, the State, and the policies thought and put into practice concepts like ethnicity and territory, and how policy and practice can (or cannot) show or hide ethnical diversity in Latin America and the Caribbean.
