Abstract With the establishment of the Holy Office in Portugal, the episcopal power to judge heresy was threatened, since the Inquisition tried to overcome the ancient episcopal power to do so. Friar Bartolomeu dos Mártires, Archbishop of Braga from 1559 to 1582, was an example of this jurisdictional conflict, and developed in his territory an alternative way regarding the uniformization of the faith. The dominican friar defended the fraternal correction, precept based on the Book of Matthew and Saint Thomas Aquinas comments about it, as an attempt to bring the heretic back to the community used by those who wanted to restrict the inquisitorial power. With the elaboration of a new model for episcopal action after the Council of Trent, he defended in his writings alternative methods and applied them in his pastoral activity as a way to reinforce his authority.
