Abstract

Our BEPE proposal considers a postdoctoral visit to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for a period of five months, divided in two stages. A first stage involving the computation of earthquake source parameters for a selection of events from the Bebedouro induced earthquakes sequence, and a second stage related to the relocation and source characterization of deep earthquakes in South America.A key question related to induced seismicity is how these events compare in terms of stress drop and magnitude scaling to natural occurring earthquakes. Hence, here we want to address this issue by calculating source parameters such as stress drop and earthquake size for the Bebedouro events, and compare them to other similar studies available in the literature. Our second goal is to use regional and teleseismic data to analyse the spatio-temporal distribution of deep events (~600 km depth) in South America and characterize their source mechanisms in order to better understand the physical processes involved in seismicity at these depths. Both induced seismicity and deep earthquakes are controversial topics in geophysics. A better understanding of the source characteristics of these types of events is fundamental to solve current open questions related to the physical processes behind them. In that context, the datasets of Bebedouro and the Brazilian seismic network (RSBR) for deep earthquakes could be of invaluable help to accomplish this goal. (AU)
