Abstract

One of the basic conditions for the formation of functional urban regions (FURs) is the organization of cities in cooperation and interaction networks. These networks are the result of important infrastructures for the socioeconomic maintenance and growth of a region. Transportation systems, as examples of such infrastructures, play an important role in enabling the exchange of goods, services and opportunities between the cities that form a FUR. Furthermore, it is known that transportation systems are driving agents in land occupation processes, which can also collaborate with the metropolization of an area. In this sense, the motivation of this research project is to conduct an exploratory study about the process of occupation of the territory derived from the provision of transportation infrastructure. That is, the hypothesis here is based on the following question: if a policy of investment in transportation infrastructure was adopted in a particular region, would we observe an occupation of this region?
