Abstract

The research project consists of a case study of the industrial base of the Companhia Estrada de Ferro Noroeste do Brasil (CEFNOB) Workshops General of the Noroeste do Brasil, located in the city of Bauru, where he began the construction of the railroad. The workshops are considered the foundation for the railway industry, as it was in them that the maintenance, installation, and reconstruction of the main part of the railway rolling stock. Built in 1921 by the then director of the Company, Arlindo Luz, the workshops had significant importance in the growth and development of the city, which before the arrival of the railroad was a village known as "word-of-the-bush", and after the start of construction in 1905, the headquarters of NOB in 1917, and construction of infrastructure necessary for the railroad, especially the workshops, presented a rapid process of modernization and civilization. The objective is to study the complex functioning of the workshops, their day-to-day, their basic position in the railroad industry, their great production, and their decline until their abandonment today. The work will include a survey of the metric and architectural complex, which will document the styles, materials, and uses of space in the workshops, and also will analyze the impact that these had on the city of Bauru, with the arrival of hundreds of new residents, creating a patio rail, installation of new neighborhoods and to the change in mores and folkways of the city. This project also has important issues facing the preservation of memory and heritage, which in addition to organizing documentation remained to ensure the reports and historical data, also aims to enter into dialogue with conservation agencies and the City Municipal of Bauru, serving as a scope for a possible process to preserve and revitalize the patio rail. The research will be developed based on historical sources such as documents and bibliographies related to Workshops; CEFNOB annual reports, filed mainly in the Museu Ferroviario Regional and Centro de Memória Regional e Inventariança of RFSA, all of these located in Bauru, analysis of drawings of the time construction; videographic and photographic survey and visits to workshops and interviews with former employees. Will be accessed several primary sources whose data are still without a profound work of analysis and documentation. As additional projects are underway in this work of scholarship Vinicius Lopes Lucas Albano and Matthew de Paula D'Almeida, analyze the construction of two other works of art of the Company, the bridges over the Rio Parana and the Paraguay River, and their influences on regions where they settled. This research will be supervised by Professor Nilson Ghirardelli, author of several works on railways and in particular, addressing the Noroeste of Brazil called: The Big Line: urban formations of northeastern São Paulo, São Paulo: Editora UNESP, 2001. The research is still linked to the Research Project: Memory Train (Sao Paulo, 1868-1971), this bound to FAPESP (2009-2011) whose purpose is expressed in the survey and inventory of documentary heritage railway in São Paulo state (process næ. : 2009/53058-0).(AU)
