Study of the bidirectional relationship between sleep and renal function

Abstract

Sleep complaints are commonly reported by the general population, affecting well-being, productivity as well as physical and mental capacity of individuals. In addition, recently it has been observed a reduction of the sleep duration compared to last 2 decades, due mainly to the higher socioeconomic pressure and the 24/7 rhythm of the urban centers. However, both sleep disorders and sleep deprivation play a role as risk factors for the development of several diseases. One of them is the chronic kidney disease (CKD), which is characterized by progressive and irreversible loss of kidney function. Patients with CKD often have sleep disorders, which apparently start at the early stages of the disease, and may be a possible risk factor for CKD. In this sense, the goal of this project is to evaluate whether there is a bidirectional relationship between the quantity and quality of sleep and the renal function. For this, volunteers of the EPISONO epidemiological study will be distributed into 3 groups: a control group (CTRL), a reduced renal function group (RRF) and a CKD group. It will be used survey data on sleep and socioeconomic patterns, physical measurements, polysomnography, and biochemical assays. The renal function will be measured via the estimation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and creatinine clearance rate. The microstructure of sleep will be assessed by means of spectral analysis. It is expected that this study will clarify the role of sleep in the renal function of individuals as well as to characterize the sleep patterns of individuals with CKD.
