Abstract

In 1960, Hymer changed the unit of analysis in business literature from country (past studies usually evaluated foreign investment volume and nation's competitiveness) to multinational enterprises and the firm's specific advantages. Later, in the eighties, the multinational enterprise was analyzed jointly with its subsidiaries as a network. The studies based on emerging market multinationals are recent. We believe the researchers' interest on this thematic could be explained by the rise on the participation of developing countries on the foreign direct investments inflows. (PILLANIA, 2009). This essay aims to understand the management of business models by multinational companies from emerging economies. Considering that business models describe how a company creates value through a combination of internal and external activities as a whole of resources, it is important to understand the design elements of the business model and how it is applied in different countries where the multinational has operations. The qualitative phase is intended to embrace the tacit elements of business model and the relationship between headquarters and subsidiaries of multinational companies. Finally, the quantitative phase will be conducted through survey research, with executives from both headquarter and its subsidiaries. (AU)
