Photoelectrocatalysis has been applied successfully in several research fields mainly in environmental and energy subjects. This project proposes the use of photoelectrochemical systems and Si/TiO2/Au composite photoanodes to explore a novel promising alternative to fast electrofluorination in order to produce drug molecules and in organics oxidation. The electrode consists of TiO2 sandwiched between a Si wafer and a gold grid. The unique aspect is three control parameters: current, bias voltage and light intensity. This is in contrast to the single control (current or voltage) available using conventional anodes, and potentially offers greater selectivity, in turn leading to cheaper and faster synthesis. We will develop stable anodes, characterise these structurally and electrochemically, and then assess their activity in the oxidation of dyes and in the selective fluorination of relevant target compounds aiming for the synthesis of F-DOPA (Parkinson's Disease).
