Abstract

Biomaterials are used in many medical applications, ranging from scaffolds for tissue regeneration to drug delivery systems. However, biomaterials often cause inflammatory reactions because they profoundly alter the homeostasis of host immune cells, such as dendritic cells (DCs). Thus, there is a major need to understand how biomaterials affect the immune function of DCs. In this project, we will analyse the chemical and physical influence of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and PLA/polyethylene glycol (PLA/PEG) blends on functional properties in DCs. Our findings should be useful for designing structures of scaffolds with more preferable biocompatible properties. (AU)
