Abstract

Obtaining of sweet potato seedlings with high sanity and nutritional quality is essential for success in the grown of this tuberous specie. However, there are still doubts about the nutritional management that should be performed in the crop during the phase of the seedlings rooting. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of Ca and P on rooting and growth of sweet potato seedlings produced in trays. The effect of Ca and P will be studied in the independent experiments in a greenhouse. The experiments will be performed in a factorial 3x5 scheme, using a randomized blocks, in the split plot design, with four replications. In the experiment with Ca the plots will be represented by rates of 0, 100 and 200 mg kg-1 Ca applied to the commercial substrate, and in the experiment with P, the plots will correspond to rates of 0, 150 and 300 mg kg-1 P. In both experiments, the subplots will correspond to assessment periods to be carried out at 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 days after planting (DAP). Every plot will be represented by a polystyrene tray with 72 cells (12 rows of 6 cells) and each subplot will be represented by four plants (4 cells) collected in the area of each plot and the adjacent plants, which will not be collected in the following assessments. It will be assessed: clod stability; number of roots and leaves per seedling; root length and surface, and root mean diameter; root growth rate; relative root growth rate; dry matter (DM) of roots, leaves, stem segment, and seedlings; leaf: root ratio, and DM accumulation rate in the roots and seedlings. The results of each experiment will be submitted to analysis of variance separately. The mean of Ca or P rates are compared by t test (DMS) (p d 0.05) and the effects of assessment periods will be analyzed by regression (p d 0.05).
