Abstract

Tropical forest succession is a highly variable process which has been intensely studied in the last decades, in order to identify process that affect succession. However, few studies use both chronosequence techniques and landscape attributes to analyze forest succession. Our study will be carried out in the Corumbataí River Watershed, located in São Paulo state, Brazil. Despite forest cover having doubled in the last 52 years, the landscape is still characterized by tropical forest remnants in an anthropic landscape. With aerial photographs from 1962, 1978, 1995, 2000 e 2008 we were able to estimate forest age of forest remnants in the study area. Then, we will randomly place 200 m radius circular landscapes, in which we will install one permanent plot in each forest of each age. We will install a total of 20 permanent plots in each forest age, summing 100 plots; of which 50 will be installed in forests in a pasture matrix (north region of the watershed studied) and 50 in forests in a sugarcane matrix (south). The vegetation structure and diversity data gathered in the permanent plots, and the land use information of the circular landscapes will allow us to carry out a multiple regression to estimate patterns of structure and biodiversity development of secondary forests in different landscape contexts. We will also be able to establish parameters for implementing and monitoring forest restoration initiatives considering landscape attributes. Finally, we will identify species and functional groups that are able to colonize degraded areas. (AU)
