Abstract

This research Project aims to (a) understand the usage of the concepts of "segregation" and "gentrification" in the field of the urban studies, and also (b) identify its implication to the subject of urban planning. The study starts with the verification of the hypothesis that the late growth - not the birth - of debates centered around the word "gentrification" is related with a tendency of not discussing "segregation". It would happen as a process in which the usage of the first term gradually gains importance in the explanation, as the second becomes less relevant. There are two steps of development: (I) the study of the meaning and of the coherence of both terms; and (II) the analysis of what each of them imply to the understanding and propositions for the urban space. For that, the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research has been chosen as the main focus of analysis, because of its relevance and load of content, so that it allows us to use it in both steps of development.
