Abstract

The uncarboxylated form of osteocalcin (uOCN), an osteoblat-derived protein, acts as a homone that has a positive effect on insulin secretion and sensitivity, as well as on fat metabolism. These observations led to the fascinating discovery of bone as an endocrine gland. Treatment with uOCN prevents hepatic steatosis in obese animal; however, little is known about the molecular mechanism of uOCN actions on steatosis. Considering the evidences that the glucose transporter GLUT2 and the transcriptional factor SREBP-1c, which regulates the expression of the gene that codificates to GLUT2 protein, have an important role on the development of hepatic steatosis on obesity, the objective of the present project is to investigate if uOCN reduces lipid accumulation via GLUT2/SREBP-1c in hepatocytes and liver os obese mice.
