Abstract This doctoral dissertation will focus on the analysis of young people as protagonist of sustainable tourism by paying particular attention to the conservation of cultural and natural heritages. Sustainable tourism is centered on the organization and structure of tourist activities towards social, economic and environmental dimensions. Thus, not only the economic benefits are expected, but also transformations of a local reality and follow-up developments are expected. Thus, the object of the present analysis turns to youth because they are key individuals within the development and decision-making processes related to conservation of natural and cultural heritages through tourism. Several methodological tools will be used to collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data. Besides the young people, tourism managers and key informants will be interviewed. It is expected that results of this study will contribute to the contemporary debate and will offer a better understanding of tourism and its interface with social and environmental problems and the role of young people as a key agents in the promotion of tourism on a sustainable basis and the formulation of public policies.
