Abstract

The equatorial Brazilian margin is seen as a new frontier of mineral resources exploration, such as in the Ceará and Barreirinhas blocks. Nevertheless the greater economic relevance and contribution to heat and mass transport from south to north hemisphere, the North Brazil Undercurrent has a very little information on the North Brazil Undercurrent in terms of its Multiple retroflections and recirculations. Discovered 20 years ago, there's still blanks about it contribution on equatorial Atlantic countercurrents formation, change in core depth and possible formation of anticyclones due to abrupt changes in continental margin orientation. This proposal seeks to identify and characterize every possible retroflection and recirculation by comparing in situ hidrographic and current observations and geostrophic velocities with global analysis from HYCOM model, covering temporal variation of morphometry, transport and spatial distribution of these structures.
