Abstract

Ecosystem sustainability depends, among other things, on ecosystems' adaptive capacity in face of the drivers of change, whether socioeconomic, political or ecological. The adaptive capacity of a system is the result of dynamics involving social actors, institutions and knowledge available to management. In this context, this project seeks to contribute to the management and conservation of ecosystems considering the involvement of people who depend on them, integrating three theoretical approaches: resilience and adaptive capacity of complex socio-ecological systems; participatory management of common-pool resources; and ecosystem stewardship (integrating conservation and development). Based on case studies with different levels of analysis and territorial coverage, our main objective is to identify potentialities and obstacles of different institutional management arrangements for integrating conservation and development at the local level. The specific objectives are to: (i) analyze the evolution of ecosystem management and conservation arrangements involving local communities, (ii) investigate how the different social groups (eg, resource users, government, NGOs, researchers, companies) have worked in the ecosystem management and conservation, (iii) identify how local ecological knowledge and practices influence management and resilience of socio-ecological systems, (iv) investigate monitoring approaches, involving communities, of social and ecological variables in management and conservation of natural resources, (v) identify feedback mechanisms present in these socio-ecological systems, with a view to adaptability and local socio-ecological resilience; and (vi) identify conditioning factors for local self-organization processes in management. Data will be collected through the methodological approach of multiple research methods in case study. The study areas will be concentrated in the Atlantic Forest, but there will be case studies from the Cerrado, the Amazon, the northeast and southern coast of Brazil, as well as international ones, from Guyana and Mozambique.
