Abstract

Conservation units play a fundamental role in the conservation of biodiversity. In 2013, the Sustainable Development Reserve (Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável RDS) Barra do Una was created in Peruíbe, in the state of São Paulo. This unit is part of the Mosaico Juréia-Itatins of Conservation Units and has within it a traditional caiçara community that depends on artisanal fishing and artisanal extraction of oysters, shellfish and crabs. Due to the various categorizations that the region has gone through, and because it is a relatively new reserve in the State, the RDS still presents unsustainable aspects with regard to the norms of the National System of Conservation Units (SNUC) and few works that point out the situation of the unity in the sustainable context. The objective of the research is to develop sustainability indicators based on the perceptions and expectations of local residents and unit managers. For this, the methodology used will be based on two participatory strategies: participatory environmental mapping and the SWOT/FOFA matrix. The research intends to create an information base on the socioeconomic profile of the community, in addition to identifying the strengths and weaknesses regarding the sustainable development of the conservation unit. The results could contribute to a participatory management of natural resources in compatibility with environmental legislation.
