Abstract

With the high demand for nitrogen (N) and maize planting migration to low fertility areas, there is the need to develop genotypes which have satisfactory yields in favorable and unfavorable nutritional conditions. Therefore, the objective is to assess the possibility to simultaneously select maize tropical lines that are nitrogen stress tolerant and nitrogen use efficient, and to check if there are differences among the statistical methods for simultaneous selection. In this context, 64 tropical maize lines will be evaluated in two locations and two nitrogen levels (high and low availability) for three plant stress response indexes: Nitrogen Agronomic Efficiency (NAE); Low Nitrogen Tolerance Index (LNTI); and Low Nitrogen Agronomic Efficiency (LNAE). The breeding values to the lines for these indexes will be predicted using mixed models equations, Restricted Maximum likelihood/Best Linear Unbiased Predictor (REML/BLUP) single-trait (univariate) and multi-trait (multivariate). Then, six methodologies for simultaneous selection to NAE and LNTI will be made, three methods of simultaneous selection (graphical analysis, additive selection index and Mulamba Mock index) and two breeding values predicted methods (REML/BLUP single-trait and multi-trait. In addition, the breeding value of LNAE will be used as a simultaneous selection method to nitrogen use efficiency and nitrogen stress tolerance. Finally, these seven methods will be compared for selection gain and accuracy. (AU)
