Abstract

Mangroves are important coastal ecosystems found in transition zones between marineand freshwater ecosystems showing characteristics of both of them. All residentorganisms, including microorganisms, harbor specific adaptations to inhabit this biome.An important but still poorly comprehended mechanism associated with adaptation ofmicroorganisms is horizontal gene transfer (HGT), which can be mediated by plasmidexchanges. Overall, methodologies that access the structure and function of microbialgroups in mangroves and the descriptions of the plasmids that host genes related tomajor changes in this system are important tools to enhance the knowledge onadaptations as drivers of processes in this diverse environment. Therefore, this projectaims to properly describe the mobilome present in the microbiome found in mangrovesoils, combining sequence-based analyses with advanced triparental conjugative transferexperiments. The data will give support for a better understand of microbial communityadaptation in mangrove soils, possibly indicating to how extent the found plasmidsmight be involved in systematic mechanisms and crucial processes for adaptation,maintenance and operation of the ecosystem.
