Abstract

The accurate of brain tumor diagnosis is extremely important to describe elements necessary for surgeon knowledge to check and treat a sick patient. However, to classify correctly a brain tumor using only conventional techniques based on optical biopsy sometimes representing a difficult challenge even for experienced pathologists. Recently new analytical techniques have been applied in cancer research and diagnosis with promising results. The search for biomarkers in tumors using chemical species information can provide good results about the type and degree of brain tumor, this is possible due the particularly use of IMS, which are capable of generating images allowing a correlation between chemistry identity and spatial distribution of a surface. The proposal focus on the study of the chemical profile from pediatric brain tumors using mass spectrometry techniques. The aim of this work consist classifying tumors through the lipid profile using DESI-IMS and statistical methods. Further, the use of other techniques based on MS and XRF (especially for metals analysis) will be made to better understanding of cellular mechanism action of the disease in the brain. The results can be a powerful source for development of fast and accurate diagnostics ally with the pathologist. This capability has already been used extensively for oncology research showing that the IMS is in translational phase with prospects to become soon a tool for routine in diagnostic centers. (AU)
