Abstract

Introduction: adolescents are a priority group in health promotion when it comes to Chronic non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The transitional period between childhood and adulthood is marked by intense biological, cognitive, emotional and social changes, and is characterized by the adoption of new behaviors, including those potentially related to the development of NCDs, the leading cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Objective: to identify patterns of both risk and protective behavior regarding NCDs among Brazilian adolescents and then to verify the association between these patterns and sociodemographic characteristics. Method: the primary data source will be the National Student's Health Survey (Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde do Escolar) from 2012, which gathered information about adolescent health through self-administered questionnaire in a sample of students enrolled in the 9th grade from public and private schools representing all the states' capitals, the five major regions of the country and the country as a whole. Data regarding eating habits, physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption and socioeconomic factors will be employed. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) will be performed to identify patterns of behavior from a list of risk and protective factors for NCDs. Linear regression models will be performed to identify associations between behavior patterns and sociodemographic characteristics. (AU)
