Abstract
Objective: To identify the effect of behavioral variables on the pattern of metabolic, cardiovascular and inflammatory variables, as well as physical growth among adolescents. Methods: Cohort study with annual follow-up of over two years, which will start in 2016 in the city of Presidente Prudente. The sample size was previously calculated for all outcomes involved in the study and, thus, baseline measures of the cohort will involve at least 236 adolescents of both sexes aged between 11 and 14, which will be monitored in 2017 [12 months] and 2018 [24 months]). These adolescents will be recruited from public schools, private schools and sport clubs in the city. Annually will be assessed: risk behaviors (sleep behavior, smoking, alcohol consumption, habit of skipping meals and sedentary behavior), habitual physical activity, metabolic / inflammatory variables (lipid profile, insulin resistance and C-reactive protein), non-alcoholic fat liver disease, blood pressure, body fatness and biological maturation. Physical activity will be assessed through the use of accelerometer. Biological maturation will be assessed by the age at peak height velocity. In the statistical analysis, numeric variables (mean difference between the moments of analysis) will be expressed as mean, standard deviation and 95% confidence interval. Analysis of covariance will be used to compare the mean differences between physically active and inactive adolescents, under the adjustment of potential confounders. The adjustment of the multivariate models will be assessed by Levene's test and the Bonferroni test will be used when necessary. Effect size measures will be provided by Eta Squared values. Finally, the linear patterns of the variables throughout the follow-up will be related between them and expressed in beta values (²). The statistical significance will be set at in p-value <0.05. All statistical analyses will be performed in the software BioEstat (version 5.0). Expected Findings: It is expected to identify longitudinal changes in pattern of cardiovascular, metabolic and inflammatory variables during adolescence, as well as, to identify effects of behavioral variables on the longitudinal pattern of these variables.
