Abstract

Heat stress in goats can be perceived by thermoregulatory responses related to respiratory rate, ventilation, evaporative losses, core temperature and sweating; however the intensity of these responses depends on breed. In addition, the relationship between thermoregulatory responses and fast heat production has not been well defined in goats. This study aims to investigate the differences between two goat breeds: Saanen e Anglo-Nubiana regarding heat production, fast heat production and physiological parameters under 20 e 35°C, using a face mask open-repirometry system. Six Saanen and six AngloNubian dry, non-pregnant goats will be used in this experiment, subjected to ambient temperature of 20 e 35°C. The animals Will be split into two groups with six animals each (3 Saanen and 3 Anglo-Nubian goats). During feeding period (three days), each group was designed to a double Latin square (6 x 6) with 6 animals and 6 hour (h)-window (7.00 - 9.00h; 9.00 - 11.00h; 11.00 - 13.00h, 13.00 - 15.00h; 15.00 - 17.00h; 17.00 - 19.00h). After the 3-d feeding, animals will be subjected to fast for 48 hours and, after that, fast heat production will be measure. We will measure respiratory rate, tidal volume, ventilation, rectal temperature, evaporative loss and heat production. (AU)
