Abstract

Telomeres are non-coding repetitive DNA present at the end of chromosomes that get shorter with each cell division. Telomere length is considered a biological marker of age, and its shortening is shown in several age-related pathologies. In Alzheimer's disease (AD), telomeres have been associated with several pathophysiological pathways, such as neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, however its mechanisms are still poorly understood. Most of the studies about telomeres in AD were in leukocytes, few is known about its effects in the Central Nervous System (CNS). Lithium has been suggested as a possible treatment for AD. It is an important mood stabilizer and its neuroprotective effects have been widely evidenced, but few is known about its effects on telomere maintenance. This study aims to evaluate the telomere length in four CNS areas (frontal cortex, parietal cortex, hippocampus and olfactory epithelium) of an AD transgenic model mice chronically treated with different doses of lithium compared to equally treated control mice. Telomere length in DNA extracted from those tissues will be quantified by real time PCR. We expect our results to contribute to the understanding of the AD effects on different CNS regions and how they respond to lithium treatment. (AU)
