Abstract

The focus of this project is the study of intermolecular interactions using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) molecule as probe, and the main technique is the Non-Coincidence Effect (NCE). This effect is consequence of intermolecular coupling of the electric dipole transition moments of neighboring molecules in the liquid; it is noted for normal modes, which give rise to intense absorption bands in the infrared spectrum. It is the case of n(SO) mode of DMSO, which in its Raman spectrum gives rise to a non-coincidence of 8 cm-1 between the anisotropic and isotropic components, this value depends critically on other species involved in interactions with the DMSO, such as the anions (CN-, SCN-, OCN-, I-, Br- and N3-) or cations (Li + and Mg2 +). The presence of these species dissolved in DMSO affects not only the NCR of this mode (n(SO)) but also your line shape, which implies significant changes in molecular dynamics. In addition to use of NCR we will use the NMR of 1H and 13C, which through appropriate parameters shows great sensitivity to intermolecular interactions of DMSO. (AU)
