Abstract

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a widely spread polar aprotic solvent with enhanced capability of dissolving polar and apolar compounds, whose usage spans from medical to cryo-protection and in general as a powerful dissolution medium. Such properties are the consequences of the substantial dipole moment of sulfoxides as well as its amphiphilic nature. With this proposal, we aim to extend our present study on DMSO structural and dynamical properties in concentrated electrolytic solutions with Raman and 13C NMR spectroscopy, by exploring phase diagram and structural/dynamic properties in DMSO (and its parent compounds: dialkyl sulfoxides) mixtures with ionic liquids, by means of a range of complementary experimental (x-ray/neutron scattering, low frequency Raman and dielectric spectroscopies) and computational (Molecular Dynamics) techniques.
