Abstract

This research proposal aims to characterize and analyze the evolution of empty urban spaces present in the urban morphology of Piracicaba - Sao Paulo, through the literature review, historical analysis and mapping these areas. Empty urban spaces are considered resulting from areas that have not allotted infrastructure that do not perform their social function, being generated by discontinuous peripheral growth and speculative real estate activity. Their owners in most private character through land retention for property speculation increase discontinuity of the urban network, socio-spatial segregation, and expenditures of municipalities, environmental impacts and decrease the quality of life of the population. The research proposal was due to the number of empty urban spaces present in Piracicaba - Sao Paulo that has a messy, sprawling growth, with low population density in relation to its urban area, which has dimension three times higher than the population needs to settle.
