Abstract

The process of urbanization of Brazilian cities has recently followed a horizontal expansion model, with the construction of new districts far from urban centers, and with housing construction on the outskirts of the cities, leading to the emptying of the urban centers, besides locomotion problems, loss of functions, peripherization, land speculation, ocupation of risk areas, precarious settlements and reduction of public areas. The necessity of the "return to the center" has been the object of architectural and city planning studies and proposals for decades. Among the various solutions pointed out for the improvement of the central, densed and consolidated areas, is the renovation of urban centers and urban sustainability. The theme of social housing is common and the potencial of promoting collective life, developing infra-structure and rehabilitate public spaces depends on it. Thus, the objective of this research is to analyse the methodological and theorical possibilities in contemporary architecture and city planning, for social housing projects in consolidated urban centers. With this purpose, projects of social housing in the central area of the city of São Paulo will be analysed, collecting and organising documents about the theme of social housing in Brazil, in an effort to contribute to the process of elaboration of new program projects and to contribute towards filling the lack that exists in the bibliography. In addition, it is proposed the analysis and the comparasion of the theorical, technical and methodological basis of this projects to others, with similar nature, elaborated in central areas of Madri, in the beginin of the 21st century. This project is part of an ampler research, realised in order to the already firmed association between the Laboratory of Studies in Contemprary Architecture (LEAC), from FEC-Unicamp, and the Group of Investigation About Collective Housing (GIVCO), from ETSAM-UPM (Politechnic University of Madri). The project is linked to process number 2011/50248-3, under the title "social housing in densed urban areas: methodological guidelines for projects in Brazil", under the responsibility of Professor PhD Leandro Medrano (fomentation line: Research Support - Regular).
