Abstract

Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a native polyphagous species of tropical regions of the Americas. In Brazil, this insect is considered the most destructive pest and it is responsible for major economic losses in corn, in addition showing damage in soybean, cotton, rice and sorghum. The high number of insecticides applications and the widespread adoption of genetically modified plants expressing Bacillus thuringiensis proteins (Berliner) (Bt plants), have elevated significantly in the selection pressure on S. frugiperda, culminating in the evolution of resistance to various insecticides including Bt proteins, raising concern about the possible population outbreaks of this pest resulting in failures in control, promoting environmental imbalance and compromising agribusiness. As a result it is necessary to expand the knowledge about complex adaptive phenomena such as resistance to these compounds as well as the need for technologies that enable proactive management of resistance of S. frugiperda to insecticides and Bt proteins. Thus, this proposal aims to use next-generation sequencing technologies (NGS) to generate knowledge in a molecular level of genetic patterns associated with S. frugiperda resistance to insecticides and Bt plants, identifying possible genetic markers capable of providing relevant information about processes evolution resulting from selective pressure associated with these compounds, thus offering new tools for the identification of resistant individuals and the monitoring of S. frugiperda to some insecticides and Bt proteins.
